Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Academic Associate Dean, Dr. Jenn Stephenson,

I am writing to request your assistance in dropping the courses HLTH 101 and PHGY 216 from my academic record. I understand the gravity of this request and the implications it may have, but I believe it is necessary for my well-being and future academic success.

Over the past year, I have been grappling with extreme mental health issues stemming from an incident that occurred on campus while I was living in residence. This incident, involving sexual violence, occurred when my roommate at the time gave the key to my room to a male stranger at the end of October 2022. This violation of my privacy and security has profoundly affected my mental health, self-worth, and sense of safety. Since then, I have been in a constant state of fight or flight, experiencing difficulty sleeping, leaving my room, and performing even simple tasks.

Despite my efforts to cope, the impact on my academic performance has been significant. While my grades from Fall 2022 were not immediately affected as most assessments had been completed before the incident, subsequent semesters have seen a significant decline. Symptoms stemming from the incident have made it challenging to complete assessments such as exams and essays, and I have also struggled with attendance, failing to complete discussion posts.

After the incident, I reached out to my residence don who provided me with resources to speak to a counselor. With their support, I was able to receive academic accommodations, though these accommodations ended once I returned for my second year. Attempting to manage symptoms alone proved overwhelming, and I subsequently reached out to the counsellor again, though I regrettably received no response. It was only later, after successfully seeking help, that I was able to begin to cope with the aftermath of the incident. My counsellor strongly recommended that I seek help from a healthcare professional due to concerns about anxiety and depression caused by the incident. However, by this point, it was too late, and I had missed far too many assessments for both HLTH 101 and PHGY 216.

The consequences of the incident I experienced in residence have not only affected my mental well-being but have also hindered my academic progress and jeopardized my future goals. As someone aspiring to attend medical school, the setbacks I have faced have left me feeling uncertain about my ability to achieve my ambitions.

I have spoken with both professors of HLTH 101 and PHGY 216, but unfortunately, no consideration for accommodations can be granted at this stage. Therefore, I am left with no choice but to seek your assistance in dropping the course.

I am committed to getting back on track academically, and I sincerely hope you will consider my request favourably and grant me the opportunity to drop HLTH 101 and PHGY 216. Your understanding and support in this matter would be greatly appreciated and would allow me to focus on rebuilding my academic journey.

Warm regards,
Shelsy Martinez Salinas
