Associate Dean (Academic)
Queen’s University
Petition to Drop Courses Due to Extenuating Circumstances
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to respectfully petition for the dropping of the following courses due to severe extenuating circumstances related to my mental health: BCHM 432, BCHM 442, and BCHM 421.
For the past year, I have been struggling with depression, which has progressively worsened, particularly since the beginning of my third year. Initially, my symptoms were mild, but they have since developed to a point where engaging in academic work triggers significant mental distress and the potential for mental breakdowns. This condition has severely impacted my ability to perform academically, a stark contrast to my previous record as a diligent and successful student.
Despite my efforts to manage this condition, including consultations with healthcare professionals on two occasions, my situation has not improved. The specific courses I am petitioning to drop have posed the greatest challenges for me, contributing to an overwhelming sense of stress and mental exhaustion. My decision to not drop these courses earlier stemmed from a deep appreciation for my time at Queen’s and a hope that I could overcome these challenges. Unfortunately, this has not been the case, and my academic performance continues to suffer as a result.
Considering these circumstances, I am seeking immediate relief from these course obligations. My plan, upon the approval of this petition, is to significantly reduce my academic load and seek more intensive help from doctors and mental health professionals. I am confident that this focused approach to my mental health will enable me to return to my studies at Queen’s with renewed vigor and a capacity to complete my academic career successfully.
I am committed to making personal adjustments to better manage my condition and ensure academic success in the future. This includes considering a lighter course load upon my return, ensuring that I can give each course the attention it deserves without compromising my mental health.
I understand the gravity of this request and assure you that this decision was not made lightly. It is my sincere belief that this course of action is necessary for my well-being and academic success. I appreciate your consideration of my petition and look forward to a positive resolution that allows me to focus on my health and future academic achievements.
Thank you for your time and understanding in this matter.
Sincerely,
Zicheng Wang
