Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am Shuran Cui, a third-year computing and creative art student. I am petitioning about the marking of question 7 and 8 of quiz 3 in CISC 352.

I am informally accused by my professor and feel unsafe now. After I got my quiz 3 paper, I found that questions 7 and 8 were not graded correctly. However, after I submitted the paper for regrading, Professor Christian Muise said the correct answers were rewritten. I have clarified that they are not rewritten with the professor. However, his decision didn't change. I think his decision is biased. He has no evidence proving that the answer is rewritten. His only reason is that he doesn't think his TA will make a mistake in grading. Despite of the lack of evidence, he talked to the undergraduate chair and offers me two options, either leave the grade as it is or spread the grade to other questions. Both of the options are still assuming that I changed the answer. I said I feel that my reputation is damaged by his false accusation. However, instead of admitting that he made the wrong judgement, he replied that he has not formally opened academic integration. I feel menaced by this and that he is threatening me.

I have consulted at the academic advising office, and they suggest I request a petition. Although it is only 2 marks out of 100 marks in the quiz and won’t make a noticeable different to the final grade, I do not let anyone do false accusation to me. My rights have been violated and it is the matter of justice rather than the grade. I would like the department to have persons who have no profit relation to Professor Muise to re-evaluate the two questions.

Question 7 and 8 asked us to indicate whether A and B are independent and give the reason. I answered both parts of the question, providing which are the conditions are not satisfied.
