Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am a French exchange student studying in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences since the beginning of September. I am asking to receive Aegrotat standing in PSYC 320 (Winter 2024).
I was hospitalized in Kingston from February 21 to March 1. The hospital stay should have been extended, but, unable to finance hospitalization in Kingston, the doctors following me in Kingston and a French medical team agreed that I should continue my care in France with my family. Having my family with me was also a determining factor in my recovery. I was therefore rushed home on March 2 and continued my treatment in France for the rest of the semester. My illness makes me extremely tired but does not completely prevent me from working, so I have been able to continue my course online, handing in assignments, papers, group work and quizzes every week in every subject. The only subject I had to drop was a course in Artificial Intelligence (CISC 352), following the advice of Mrs Everson, who had been able to contact my professor who told her that this was not possible to follow entirely this course online. Of course, I was not as energetic and efficient during this period as I had been in the first term, but I still had the will to hand in every assignment I was asked to hand in, to the best of my ability. This has sometimes meant asking for an extension on certain assignments. The Cognitive Neuroscience course - Principles of Memory (PSCY 320) was a course that fascinated me and for which I also continued to hand in papers, group work and the requested weekly responses. To write these responses each week, I read the course chapters in the book on which the course was based, the slides and asked my teacher for the content of the weekly in-class demonstrations.
Unfortunately, my state of health did not allow me to return to Canada in early April. I still needed the presence and support of my family. Therefore, I continued my treatment (which means seeing the family physician and taking my medication) in France at this time of the year and only came for the final exams at the end of April. I had two final exams to take: a PSYC 305 exam on April 19 and a STAT 269 exam on April 22. Fortunately, this corresponded to a week's vacation for my mom, who was able to accompany me to Kingston and take care of me that week.

I therefore missed the second midterm of my PSYC 320- Principles of Memory course. This was normally scheduled for April 5, but at that time of year I was not yet well enough to fly. I am writing to you hereby to request, if you consider it fair, an Aegrotat grade for my course PSYC 320-Principles of Memory. I thank you for taking the time to read this letter,
