Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to you today to petition for an aegrotat standing in the following courses: ENGL 330, ENGL 451 and FREN 331.
Last year, I was in my final semester of my undergraduate degree and looking forward to graduating with my peers. I had just submitted my final assignment for one of the six of my courses and only had one exam/paper for the remainder of my classes. Then, I had an accident that landed me in the hospital with twenty two stitches and a complete loss of mobility in my arm.
I was unable finish my academics in this state and thus made an appointment with my QSAS advisor at the time Deb Bruce. We reached out to my professors to ask for an incomplete grade in the course until I was able to complete the final assessments. One of my professors, Leslie Ritchie, was unable to offer a deferred exam as she was travelling and recommended I request an aegrotat standing in the course she offered (ENGL 330). My ENGL 471 professor was able to extend the date but not for very long as she was travelling as well. Therefore, I pushed myself through the injury to submit the final assessments on the last day she could extend it to (May 31st). I still was in rehab trying to regain my mobility and was still in pain. While I did submit the final tasks, the process was painful and resulted in rushed work that did not grant me the grade I would have liked in a course I was previously doing well in. I saw my doctor again after this and it was decided that I was unfit to return to my academics at this time to complete the remaining courses (FREN 331, SOCY 389 and ENGL 451). Eventually, it was decided that I could return to my academics in October.
At the end of September, I got a call from my doctor letting me know that in a routine MRI on my head for something unrelated, they discovered a tumour. This took over the next few months of my life. I had numerous scans, tests, blood work and biopsies along with uncertainty regarding the possibility of cancer and because of the placement of the tumour, paralysis is also a concern.
This derailed my academic journey. I was trying to focus on my health and getting through the situation. While it still is not solved, I do not want to go another year without completing my undergraduate degree. I have met with my current QSAS advisor Meg Hall and an academic advisor Kerri Andrews. With their guidance, we have made a plan to petition for an aegrotat standing in three out of four of the remaining courses from my last semester. The reason I am not applying for the fourth is because I understand you have to have completed 60% or more of the course load and I had not for SOCY 389. I will be filing a petition for a late drop in this course and then will be requesting permission to take an online course to replace this credit and hopefully finally complete my undergraduate degree.
I am keenly aware of the exceptional nature of this petition and am deeply grateful for your consideration of my circumstances. Should you require any further documentation or clarification regarding my situation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
