Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to request special consideration for the retroactive withdrawal from my course, PHYS239, for which the deadline has passed. This request stems from a series of personal challenges that significantly impaired my academic performance and mental well-being. In the summer of 2023, I unfortunately had to face the loss of my grandmother. Her passing deeply affected me, exponentially increasing pre-existing mental health issues and leading to a severe emotional distress. During this vulnerable time, I found myself resorting to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance use, which further deteriorated my mental state and academic focus. Despite my efforts to maintain my academic responsibilities, the impact of my grandmother's death and the ensuing personal struggles of a previous break up made it exceedingly difficult to perform at my usual capability. Recognizing my declining mental health, I began attending weekly therapy sessions provided by the university's counseling center. Although these sessions have been monumental in my recovery, the process has been gradual, and my academic performance during the affected period did not reflect my true potential. Given these circumstances, I believe that withdrawing from electromagnetism would not only accurately reflect the extraordinary challenges I faced but also allow me to focus on my recovery and continuing my education with the dedication and effort I am truly capable of. I am committed to learning from these experiences and implementing healthier coping strategies with the ongoing support of my therapist. I have a set plan that I am determined to follow this next term to ensure academic success. I have taken a computer science course this summer to help me get back on track for my major.
