Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
Thank you for taking the time to read my petition. I am writing this letter to explain why I felt the need to drop BIOL 404 from the Summer term. In the days leading up to the start of BIOL 404, there were many stressful factors occurring in my life that were affecting my mental state. My girlfriend has been going through some unsolved medical issues, and one of my closest friends was in mental distress and needed moral support which took up a lot of my attention. I thought at the time that I could handle the events happening in my life, so I decided to proceed with the course.
By the second day of class (Tuesday, April 30), I began to doubt my ability to perform up to my usual academic standards. That same evening, I received news from my parents of the deteriorating state of my grandmother, which compounded the amount of stress I was already dealing with. As a result of this decline in health, she has just been admitted into a long-term care facility. I tried to continue attending BIOL 404 the next day (Wednesday, May 1) but just could not concentrate on my coursework. After speaking with my parents that afternoon, knowing that I was struggling, we thought it would be best for me to return home. That afternoon, I decided to drop the course by emailing the Undergraduate Biology Office. Unfortunately, I was unaware that the deadline to drop the course was Monday, April 29, the first day of class. I only realized this after receiving a response from the Undergraduate Administrative Coordinator for the Biology Office on Friday, May 3.
Given this extenuating situation I am asking for permission to have BIOL 404 dropped from my transcript. Attached to my petition is a letter of attestation written by my mother, and a letter from the long-term care facility.
