Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Attn Associate Dean (Academic),

I am petitioning to request a credit standing for the following courses, SOCY 275 (Fall Term, 2023), PSYC 337, PSYC 340, and PSYC 354 (Winter Term, 2024). I believe that my academic abilities were significantly impacted by unforeseen circumstances beyond my control during this time.

In August 2023, I was physically assaulted a week before the Fall Term began. This event caused extreme mental distress as I moved away from my support system to begin the Fall Term immediately after. In November I was physically assaulted a second time before final exams for the Fall Term. This time was more severe than the first time and I was unable to fully process the events that had occurred while managing my academics. This heightened the effects of my pre-existing stress condition (diagnosed in 2023). My final exam grade for SOCY 275 was impacted the most due to the heavily weighted midterms and exams. During the time of these tests, I was not able to fully comprehend how much of an impact the traumatic events had on me. My stress continued into the Winter Term of 2024, and unfortunately, two more traumatizing circumstances occurred in March. I was sexually assaulted at the beginning of March and near the end of March there was an incident that threatened my safety causing me to involve police. These incidents caused a substantial decline in my mental health and general well-being. I believe the combination of these events has led to my current academic standing.

Concerning my plan to help aid these circumstances I have sought out information on how to apply for academic accommodations for the 2024-2025 academic year. As well, I have connected with QSAS to seek further support and I am actively meeting with a counsellor from Student Wellness Services. I have also made significant changes to my circumstances so that I no longer have to interact with the perpetrators.
