Petition Letter: To the Faculty of Arts & Science

Dear Members of the Committee,
I Aprateem Chatterjee, writing this letter in order to petition for extending the completion of the following course codes: ECON 250, ECON 241, STAT 361, COMM 211; and dropping the following course codes: STAT 463, ECON 239, BIO 300, MATH 281, and MATH 339 based on the accidental medical circumstances. On November 6th 2023, I had to rush to hospital emergency, suffering a mallet injury to my middle finger while playing intermural football (x-ray report attached).
The pain medication given by the hospital did not help and the pain continued for few weeks thereby affecting my studies and continuing my class assignments.
Finally due to delayed diagnosis of the actual problem I had to visit the hospital on November 28th for the second time. On recommendation, I saw Dr.Edmunds, Plastic Surgeon, on December 5th and underwent a surgical procedure by inserting two k-wires longitudinally for alignment.
The details of the injury, and surgical procedure are attached in the document released by the hospital.
My follow-up appointment on December 19th recommended the wires to be in place for total 8 weeks.
The wires got removed on February 8th, 2024, with very limited motion, and the final appointment on March 8th, showed little improvement, but still difficulty in writing and continuing normal motion. These resulted not being able to write the final exams in both the semesters.
The following medical situation was very stressful being an out-of-town student, creating anxiety and mental fatigue.
I was not aware of all the rules and regulations on how to tackle this critical situation. In the last week of April, I had to take help from the Queens wellness center, as well as the Arts & Science academic advising team (Allison Gowanlock).
Based on their recommendation, I am filing this petition to consider my case by providing me time to complete a few of my courses before the fall term and dropping the remaining due to the extenuating circumstance.
I really hope the committee will consider my case and support me during this difficult time.
