Petition Letter: Dear Recipient,
I am writing to discuss my grade on a Final Examination for the course CISC 454 instructed by James Stewart. It was stated in the syllabus that if one fails the exam then they fail the course. I got a 35% (8.5/24) on the final examination and finished the course with a 50.1%. I am asking for a “Review of the instructor’s decision on grade in the exam” as I believe it was harshly marked and was unfair to the students as approximately 25% of the class failed a pass-fail fourth-year exam that is only offered in our final term. I discussed the mark and my final grade with the professor, who told me, “I cannot see any way for you to pass the course”.
I do not have access to the final examination so I can not say whether or not there was bias, error, or a discrepancy in marking, but by seeing the failure rate of a pass-fail fourth-year exam one can see that it was not fairly marked and delivered.
If the final mark does stand, I would like to take the online course COMP 390 at Athabasca University this summer as a retake. I have accepted a postgraduate program that begins this fall so needing to finish my degree this summer is essential. After asking for a LoP from the Undergraduate Chair, he responded by saying “It would be too late for the LoP process for taking courses outside Queen's”, even though I started the process of obtaining it the day I got my failing mark back. This seems extremely unfair and does not make sense.
Any help with this issue is welcomed and I hope we can have this resolved in due time.
