Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Academic),

I am writing to request an extension of the deadline to submit incomplete work in ANAT 100, HSCI 270, and IDIS 373 due to extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my ability to complete the course requirements within the standard timeframe.

In late February and early March of 2024, I experienced a series of traumatic events that severely impacted my mental health and exacerbated symptoms of my disability, culminating in a suicide attempt in April 2024. Following the attempt, I was briefly hospitalized and required intensive psychological care and ongoing therapy. These experiences collectively made it difficult for me to focus on my academic responsibilities.

Given the severity of these circumstances, I was unable to complete my coursework despite my best efforts. My QSAS advisor and psychiatrist are both aware of my situation and have been supportive throughout this period. I have also made significant changes to my lifestyle that have contributed to my recovery. However, managing these changes initially hindered my ability to complete coursework by the outlined deadlines.

I have been working diligently to complete my outstanding work and have already finished a few overdue assignments. However, I require additional time to complete other assessments. I am hoping that with this appeal, I may be able to complete and submit my work, and have it accepted by course instructors, enabling me to fulfill the credits needed to graduate as planned.

I am now in active recovery, have reassessed my medication and treatment plan with my psychiatrist, and am receiving weekly psychotherapy. These steps have allowed me to reach a point in my recovery where I am able to complete and submit my work.

I understand the importance of adhering to academic policies and deadlines, and I deeply appreciate your consideration of my situation. Thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time.

Sincerely,
Haneen Saleem
