Petition Letter: Extenuating circumstances, beyond my control affected my ability to complete course work in the deadlines given.
The event:
One night I had severe chest pain and went to the hospital as a result. Have documentation of this.
This resulted in me going off my ADHD medication (lisdexamfetamine) a medication I had been on since age 13. Due to concerns with its effect on heart. This resulted in withdrawal from the medication as well as the additional strain of my disability on my ability to complete work. Effects of my disability are outlined in my accommodations and are mostly executive function.
This also coincided with personal circumstances that I’ve been dealing with that have made me fall off the academic pipeline. I don’t really want to share that much about it but but as evident from my grades (declining) I’ve been struggling with my mental health and was in a deteriorating relationship that I felt like I couldn’t get out of.
Affect on academic performance:
Disability:
As my psycho-educational assessment indicates I have many difficulties that make tasks longer to complete. Since last year I’ve had a lot of struggles having a good work environment and motivation to complete work as my grades have been falling off since winter 2023.
Specifically I think my executive function was really incapacitating. Especially with the lack of medication to offset it and the withdrawal from said medication.
Medication:
In the attached documented it shows the effects of the medication and the effects of withdrawal.
The two side effects of withdrawal that affected me the most were anxiety and depression. I was extremely anxious about my work and didn’t want to leave bed or have the motivation to do any.
This medication had been a tool since age 13 that enabled me to sit down and get work done taking that tool away meant that I really struggled to complete work and lacked motivation for big tasks.
Personal:
Because of problems in my personal life (relationships) I lacked adequate tools to deal with my executive function issues and didn’t have good working environments as outlined in my accommodations.
My actions:
I tried to submit for extenuating circumstances but the portal wouldn’t let me. I also felt a lot of anxiety about submitting for this because I felt like I should’ve been able to finish it and hated admitting that I was overwhelmed by my disability.
Personally I’ve had a lot of development and am in a much better place to complete work and just as a person.
