Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

I am writing to formally petition to drop the ENIN240 (Design Thinking) course for the Summer 2024 term after the official drop deadline.

I have just finished my second year of study as a student majoring in environmental science. Because I was required to drop a class during the first semester of my second year, I decided to enroll in summer classes to make up for the class that I had dropped. I enrolled in both ENIN240 (online), which was an option, and MATH121, which was a mandatory course for my degree.

Following the beginning of both classes, I realized that MATH121 was significantly more difficult than I had imagined. Despite this, I continued taking both classes until I went to Parry Sound (located north from Toronto, Ontario) for a weekend. During that weekend, I discovered that the MATH121 class consumed a considerable amount of my time, making it quite hard for me to manage two classes simultaneously. Following this realization, I decided to discontinue ENIN240 because it is unnecessary for my degree. MATH121, on the other hand, may replace the class I dropped during the first semester.

As of May 11th, the deadline for dropping summer classes had passed. I decided to withdraw from ENIN240 on the morning of May 10th. Despite this, my SOLUS portal, which was responsible for dropping classes, had super bad connection and Wi-Fi. Later that evening, I attempted to drop the class; however, I encountered persistent problems with the portal. When I eventually reached the page where I could drop the class, I pressed the drop button, which sat at loading for 5-10 minutes. I assumed it dropped since I watched it load for some time. However, when I returned to Toronto the following day, I discovered the drop had yet to be processed.
I immediately dropped the class on the afternoon of May 11th, but it was past the deadline. This is why I am submitting this petition. I have chosen to drop ENIN240 because it is an elective, and I do not need it for my major. Additionally, I did not complete any quizzes or assignments for the course before or after I dropped it. From this point on, I intend to make better-informed judgments and carefully plan out my course load to avoid circumstances like these. It has been brought to my attention that even elective classes necessitate serious consideration and prompt action. I intend to meet all deadlines and seek assistance if I encounter problems of a similar nature.

I appreciate your consideration of my plea. I have made a serious commitment to accepting responsibility for my actions and ensuring that my academic success is not hindered in any way.
