Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Michelle Chu and I am appealing my requirement to withdraw.

The last academic year has been challenging for me due to a variety of causes. To begin, I enrolled myself in a full course load without realizing that due to my health, I would be incapable of keeping up. I spent the entire year disliking the majority of my courses which were required for my English major without considering that I had the option to revaluate my academic plan. My disinterest lead to a lack of motivation as I was battling ongoing personal issues that directly impact my mental health, such as coping with my history of abuse and complications within my family. My inability to handle my academics created an irregular sleep pattern that crippled me for the first three months of second semester during the time when I was supposed to catch up and finish any remaining assignments from the first term. I also found out that I struggle with perfectionism, causing me to miss deadlines due to anxiety and depression.

I have created an academic plan with many proactive initiatives that I have begun to practice in hopes to be successful next year. I have been seeing my counselor from HCDS on a regular basis (every two weeks) and I have found his guidance extremely helpful. The process has been ongoing for more than a year and I am confident I will be able to achieve my goals with the right focus, help, and discipline.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: The following academic plan was created with the aid of extensive discussions with my counselor, Chuck Vetere. I have come to the conclusion that I will be able to be successful by taking a smaller course load as a part time student. I have decided to change my major in English into a general Arts and Science program while keeping my minor in World Languages. I have begun taking medication to regulate my sleep pattern through the supervision of my physician and I now possess the resources to correct my past habits. I plan on continuing my regular appointments with my counselor and I would like to seek guidance from other resources such as the Learning Commons, a strategies counselor and an academic advisor. I have begun implementing proactive strategies such as creating consistent schedules and implementing commitments in writing, such as to do lists. I plan on continuing this when September comes by doing my readings in advance and setting aside adequate time on my schedule for academic study. I would like to take some online courses so that my grades do not suffer due to poor attendance as a result of my fragile health and focus on staying realistic to overcome any impulses for perfectionism. I will be moving back into residence to decrease stress related daily activities such as allotting time to cook while decreasing my living expenses. Not only will I be able to empower myself to eat well to keep myself healthy, I will have an increased proximity to classes so I have more incentive to go especially during the winter months. I want to retake ENGL 237 and CHIN 200 and I would also like to plan regular consultations with my professors and at the Writing Center. By implementing these strategies and monitoring my health, I hope to achieve academic success in the coming year. I would appreciate your support and understanding as I continuously strive towards graduation and good health.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,

Michelle Chu
