Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to you to request that you waive the requirement to withdraw for one year and give me a chance to continue my studies at Queen's University. I understand that my recent academic performance has not met expectations and for that I take full responsibility.

I would like to explain the circumstances that led to my poor performance. My junior and senior high school years were during the Covid pandemic, in which course loads were reduced and final exams were dropped. This led to me to being poorly prepared for university level academics. I often found myself overwhelmed, freezing up and unable to process what I was reading, which was frustrating and stressful. This led to stress related illness which caused missed deadlines, which led to bad grades, which led to more stress, which further impacted my academic performance.

Although I had previous experience with online learning there was a lot more direct support available. The Queens online format was confusing, and I was unaware of what resources were available, and unsure of who to turn to for support. In high school, I was able to chat with teachers or guidance counsellors whenever I needed help, whereas at Queen's I was directed to fill out various forms. I found it intimidating and avoided it altogether, which further negatively impacted my academic progress.

I want to assure you that I had already resolved to improve my grades before receiving this decision. I realized that I could not continue in this manner. I learned about academic advising and QSAS and resolved to reach out. I have also reached out to family for additional support, and developed an academic plan to manage my course work more efficiently. I am also working on physical and mental health, prioritizing self care, and seeking professional help when needed.

Unfortunately, I was not able to recover from the poor grades in time to meet the university's standards. However, I am eager to continue my education and demonstrate my capabilities under more manageable circumstances. I am confident that with an academic plan and additional support, I can excel academically and meet the university's standards.

I respectfully request a chance to stay enrolled at Queens' and work towards improving my academic standing.
