Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
Good day. I would like to appeal the extenuating circumstances petition deadline for a few of my classes. In the winter of the 2022/23 school year, I got pneumonia which led to a flare-up in an existing health condition I have which led to me being hospitalized for over a month. I missed a large number of classes and assessments, which hindered both my learning and my grades. I did not request to petition the grades sooner because I was angry, frustrated, and exhausted by the whole situation. I was upset with the school’s maintenance team because during the beginning of the winter semester, there was a deep freeze and I had called maintenance to come fix a window that wouldn’t close, and they never came. It left the room freezing which eventually dominoed into me being in the hospital with pneumonia and then when I was discharged, not all of my professors helped allow me to catch up and complete missed assignments. So, by the time the semester was over I was so discouraged and ashamed with my grades that I did not want to think about it anymore or investigate my options to fix it because it seemed as though I had none. I thought I could do nothing but accept the bad grades and just wanted to put it behind me.
I was young scared and unaware of my options at the time. Now I have had time to reflect on the situation and speak to an academic advisor, and I would like an opportunity to get some of the grades appealed. They are holding my GPA down and preventing me from transferring out of a major that I am stuck in after the low grades that I received from missing class and not learning concepts I was supposed to learn at the time. More importantly, the low grades I received as a result of a circumstance out of my control are hurting my chances of any post-graduate school opportunities. I do acknowledge, that it is a little late, but this would help improve many aspects of my life and my educational journey.
Thank you.
