Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to drop Francais intensif 1 (FREN P11), taken during the second semester of winter 2014, taught by professor M.L. Kaitting.
On February 25th, 2014 my close aunt Susan Marie Field passed away due to cancer. She raised me for much of my life and had always been an integral part of my life. I was notified Sunday, January 19th that she had been unexpectedly diagnosed with stage IV cancer. With her weakened immune system due to a lifetime of lupus, she only had a limited amount of time to live. I frequently had to travel to Welland and Hamilton to help my family and visit her. As a result, I missed classes and was absent during the only two tests on February 10th and March 17th. The first test I missed I was visiting my aunt in Welland when she was awfully ill. The second test I missed I had to return to Hamilton to help my family with issues arisen from the funeral and help sell her house. I spoke with FREN P11 professor M.L. Kaitting and she suggested prorating my exam to be worth 100 of my final grade. She highly recommended that I file for an appeal to drop the course from appearing on my transcript. I became overwhelmed by the workload and performed poorly due to the extenuating circumstances of my aunt¿¿s cancer diagnosis, death, funeral and issues that resulted from her death.
I am appealing to drop FREN P11 from my transcript and propose that I will retake the course this September 2014. I am a hardworking student and am confident that I will succeed in the future.
Sincerely,
Andrew Lantz
