Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
Re: Petition to Waive deadline for response to the Request to Withdraw notification

Please receive this letter as my request to waive the 15-business day deadline for response to the Requirement to Withdraw from Queens for one year, effective 05/15/2024.

On the heels of a very difficult 2023-2024 academic year, which I spent largely incapacitated with debilitating anxiety and panic attacks, I tried to return this past semester, too soon. I had support in place, including therapy, access to support services on campus, and my family’s support. In some ways, I was mentally and emotionally healthier and made good strides. These benefits did not extend to supporting academic success, unfortunately.

I missed the 15-day deadline because I mis-read the policy, while traveling back to my family and starting on new medication. I tried 3-4 days trying to get on the academic advisor ZOOM office hours before the deadline, but was not able to get through until this week. They advised me of the deadline being missed and so I am submitting this request immediately.

I believe my grades do not reflect what I am capable of. I am continuing to work with my therapist and I started medication for ADHD a few weeks ago, with promising results.

I will be requesting that the mandatory withdrawal for 1 year be removed in order to assist me with applying to take 1-2 classes at a local college. This is a barrier to doing so, at this time. I believe it is time for me to reset for this next year, at home, nearer to family, while learning what I most need to be successful.

I would appreciate the opportunity to provide further information and plead my case. I apologize for the inconvenience of missing the dealing and thank you for your consideration.

More detail and documentation will be provided when I am able to appeal the one-year requirement for withdrawal.

Thank you for your consideration.

Meghan Duke
