Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: This petition is to waive the one year deadline. I was at Queen’s in my first year, 2021-2022. I experienced a significant amount of depression and anxiety throughout my first year. These psychological challenges effected my ability to perform in specific courses. I was effected by this challenge from fall 2021 up until it began to improve around fall 2022, but until June 2023, I continued to adjust to my new education environment and recovering from the difficult time I faced at Queens. Throughout that time I consulted with healthcare and mental health professionals. I was put on medication to relieve the symptoms of my depression and continued with counseling until I could no longer afford it. In addition, after my first year I left Queens and transferred to Ryerson University, now TMU. Throughout the beginning of my time at TMU I still struggled as I was adapting to a new environment along with other prolonged issues. I ways delayed in the initial petition to apply for credit standing for a course due to these extenuating circumstances, and waited until now to submit a petition for the deadline as I still have been struggling with extreme anxiety. This anxiety led me to overthink this decision to petition the grade, and ultimately too much time passed to do it within one year. Additionally, I was under the impression that Graduate schools would not be looking at my first year transcript, as it was from a different school, and that there was no point in petitioning my grade. Until, I found out that I must include grades from every post-secondary institution I attended, and now I am eager to work on getting one of the grades off my transcript and denoting it credit standing. I understand that credit standing is typically given for grades below a certain threshold, but I know the grade I received in first year physics is not representative of me and my abilities. Because it was a full year course, my average between the first and second semesters ended up being my final grade, and I know that if each were individual I would only be appealing the second semester grade. My second semester grades were really where things started to decline and get bad, as I lost considerable motivation and drive to pursue my education. After transferring, I fell back in love with school and have not had a grade below an A since I made this decision.
