Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Academics,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally petition against my requirement to withdraw from Queen’s for a minimum of one year, due to some extenuating circumstances. I would first like to address the fact that I have made the petition the previous year, and I do not want it to seem as though I had taken advantage of my previously granted petition. After the passing of my family member in January of 2023, in November of 2023 I received news that my uncle had also passed which further triggered my mental health and I relapsed into a depressive state which in turn resulted in me not completing my final assignments in that semester causing my failing grades. I had then decided to return to British Columbia as I was unable to return to my home country of Thailand for a second funeral. I remained in BC for longer to meet with my mental health counsellor, and we decided I would return to Kingston to try and finish my second semester. I attended my courses and tried my best to keep an active participation, though was unable to complete some major assignments, as I was going back and forth between states of my mental health which then resulted in my failing year. I did not reach out for further help due to my state, until the end of the semester when I contacted my advisors and mental health counsellors who have helped me reach my current state where I am in a fit and stable mentality with a good support system. I understand the importance of maintaining academic standards and fulfilling university requirements. However, these unpredictable and extenuating circumstances impacted my mental illness and overall health more than I could have expected within the year. I want to prove my commitment to my education and full intentions to complete my degree. I am receiving further treatment and am in contact with most of my professors to discuss the submission of my outstanding assignments and potential change of grade.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If my petition is granted, my future plan is to become a part-time student and take a much lighter course load and have also discussed with an advisor on changing my plan from Geological science to Environmental science. I will once again be in contact with QSAS and find a regular counsellor in Kingston instead of my previous online counselling during the school year. I will maintain contact with an advisor to keep myself on track of academic progress as well as discussing my struggles and ask for help when needed. A close family member will also be moving to Kingston in order to help me maintain my progress and no longer have any further relapses, ensuring I have a proper support system nearby. I would like to prove my commitment to my education and my determination to pursue my degree.
