Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am petitioning the Faculty’s decision that I must be on academic probation for the 2024/2025 academic year at Queen's University and I am asking to drop my Psyc100 course (Fall/Winter) that I had failed.

Febuary 25th, I was at home (Chatham, ON) for reading week and was in a very sudden and serious car accident. This incident had led to me being at home for a month, with academic consideration valid from Febuary 25th to March 22nd, 2024. I had a concussion, whiplash, and severe PTSD. Once returning to school, I was experiencing more PTSD and was not mentally or physically stable. A few weeks later, the problems I had were not getting any better, and so I had been put on antidepressants and anti anxiety medication which I had never needed before this incident. I had a average above 70 during my first semester, and due to the extenuating circumstances of my car accident, my academics had decreased significantly during second semester. I had managed to pass all of my courses other than Psyc100, which is a mandatory course in the Con-Ed program. Looking back, I should have dropped it, although I had already dropped a HIST course due to the time I was off of school and felt that it was too many credits to drop. Now that I had failed psyc by a few percent, I am very regretful of this decision. I understand I should have dropped it. I had put a lot of effort into the exam, although with my recovering concussion I had limitations of the amount of time I could focus on studying. I am an orientation leader for this upcoming fall, and am unsure if I will keep my position while being on academic probation. Because of academic probation, I will not be enrolled in my PROF or EXLR courses. I know I am more than capable of being successful in the next year, and had been successful in my PROF and EXLR courses this year. I am aware that the only reason I am on academic probation is because of the extenuating circumstances I had experienced this year, and my academics will not be a problem in the future. If this petition is successful, I plan on majoring in french, minoring in geography, and getting my bachelor of education in P/J. I am dedicated to my academics and position in my program, and will do anything I can in order to be removed from academic probation and to be enrolled in PROF and EXLR this upcoming year.
