Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson and the Academic Petitions Office,
I am writing this petition with the intent of being able to waive the 21-day/one-year deadline in order to submit a further petition to drop courses that I took in the Fall of 2021, Winter 2022, and Summer 2022.
Since my diagnosis of ADHD after my first year at Queen’s, I had never sought out the advice of professionals in the neurodivergent space to help me succeed. After the summer term in 2022 had finished, I knew I had to take a step back from my education and hit the pause button. Before this moment, the idea of not completing my degree had never crossed my mind, but after speaking with my parents, I knew that at least a year of work, combined with reaching out to the right people for support, would help me overcome the challenges I was facing.
So, during August 2022, when I could have attempted to have my 2021/2022 courses dropped, my focus was applying for jobs in my hometown while feeling a mixture of stress and frustration at myself for being in this position. This was a difficult time for me, knowing that my friends were finishing their degrees and I was doing quite the opposite. I knew that time off school was the tough but right call to make because if I wanted to be successful at Queen’s and other undertakings in the future, I needed to begin to understand my diagnosis of ADHD.
As soon as I officially decided to pause my schooling, I was resolute in my intention to return. The thought of not completing my degree was not something I could bear. It’s been nearly two years since that decision, and in retrospect, it was the right one. While my journey back to school hasn’t been without challenges, I had my most successful term this past winter, taking six classes.
In my next petition, I will describe my journey to this point and the changes I had to make to address ADHD struggles in the classroom. I know that I’ve made mistakes and have been the direct recipient of the consequences. I’m just hoping to have a clean slate to take on my future endeavors.
