Petition Letter: Subject: Petition to Waive a Petition Deadline

Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Mahek Dolu and my student ID is 20323608. I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request a waiver of the petition deadline to contest the decision made on May 23rd, 2023, requiring me to withdraw for one year.

I missed the June 13, 2023, deadline to submit my petition because, at the time, I initially accepted your decision and had no intention of submitting one, despite there being extenuating circumstances that lead to my poor academic performance. I believed that a year away from studies would benefit me, yet I now realize the serious implications this decision has had, particularly regarding program selection and my GPA eligibility.

Following your instructions in the letter and the guidance provided on the Queen’s website, I opted to take a year away from studies to address my mental health concerns, which were a significant factor in my performance, under the guidance of my therapist and with the support of my family. I made this decision and acted to the best of my knowledge at the time. My intention was to return in Fall Term 2024 with renewed focus and determination to improve my GPA.

Recently, I discovered that due to the 24 credits I accumulated, including 18 transferred from high school courses, I am unable to register for classes without selecting a program. Unfortunately, my current cumulative GPA of below 0.7 disqualifies me from any available programs. After consulting several academic advisors, I have concluded that my best chance of returning to and continuing my studies is to contest your decision, with the hope of having my failed courses dropped to improve my GPA sufficiently for program eligibility.

After consulting several academic advisors, I have concluded that my best chance of returning to and continuing my studies is to petition the decision requiring me to withdraw for one year on the grounds of my extenuating circumstances. My intention is to have my failed courses dropped in order to improve my GPA sufficiently for program eligibility.

I kindly request that the deadline to petition be waived. I understand the importance of deadlines and that a considerable time has passed since the expiry of my deadline but hope for your understanding given the circumstances. My personal challenges are much improved and I have confidence in my ability to manage them whilst keeping up with my studies. I am prepared to submit my petition regarding my program eligibility along with any required documentation as soon as possible.

Please let me know if there are any specific procedures or additional information required to process this petition. I appreciate your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind Regards,
Mahek Dolu
