Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I would like to drop this course as I was suffering from severe mental health issues during the Fall 2023 term. This caused me to drop another one of my courses, and for this course, caused me physical illness to the point where I missed both examinations. I was seeing Queen's SWS at the time, where I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression, but the treatment they prescribed was given late in the semester.

Since this course was based on two examinations only (a midterm and a final), and my health at the time was not good enough to complete those, I believe that dropping the course would be reflective of how my personal circumstances affected my performance. I attended classes and did (ungraded) homework, I was simply very unlucky with the timing of when my health would fail. Since that term, I have been trying to avoid major stressors and focus on doing my best in the present, as well as monitoring my own health to ensure I could complete academic requirements.

To be clear, because the final grade was based on two assessments I could not attend for health reasons, I am following the instructions given to students on the Academic Appeals webpage: 'Students with extenuating circumstances who have been unable to complete the majority of the work in a class should consider a petition to drop a class after the deadline rather than an extension of the deadline to submit incomplete work.'
