Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am submitting a petition for a late drop for the course PSYC 221 which I took in person during the winter 2024 semester. I am eager for the opportunity to have the failing grade removed from my official transcript as I have been dealing with significant mental health difficulties for the last eight months which interfered with my academic performance.

I have been suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder since before I began university in fall 2022 and in the last year my symptoms have worsened. I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder in January 2024 and up until a month ago, I have been going through a severe depressive episode. Despite seeking treatment with a psychiatrist, my symptoms (low mood, poor concentration, lethargy, and extreme anxiety) made it very difficult for me to keep up with the academic work in the winter 2024 semester, particularly in PSYC 221. This course relied heavily on keeping on track with textbook readings and studying for midterms, and I had an extremely difficult time. The symptoms of depression and anxiety interfered with my functioning and ability to complete my work.

I plan on retaking PSYC 221 this coming academic year as it is a core requirement for my program. I am currently receiving treatment for depression and I am optimistic that I will be able to pass the course in the fall semester. As you can see on my official transcript, I have never failed a course before which is why I believe that with the right treatment, I will be able to pass the course. Please see the enclosed letter from my physician.
