Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hi there, I'm writing to appeal for a review of my overall grade due to extenuating circumstances around the time of the final project. I am writing now as it has taken me several months of therapy and working with a counsellor given the situation that developed over the months of November 2023-January 2024. During this time period, I engaged the services of Queen's Wellness Services where I was granted an extension, however, given the impact on my mental health and impact on my physical well-being the extension wasn't enough to help me overcome the trauma that I was facing. I do not know how specific I need to be in this application, however, I sought help and received it over the course of many weeks from Barbara Lotan. The personal circumstances I was dealing with made it very difficult for me to focus on academics, retain information while studying, collect my thoughts, and show up academically in the way I normally would. I think my instructors in looking at my previous work would identify a significant dropoff in my work, and this is completely attributed to the assault. In addition to Barbara, I sought support through other counsellors and therapists provided by my family and prioritized that during a very confusing and upsetting time to the detriment of this course in particular. I am more than happy to provide the name of my therapist in Toronto as needed. My intention is to major in Film and Media, and it's an additional blow to realize that not only did this impact my entire first year, but it is now going to impact my future at Queen's and the program I want to Major in. I am more than capable of achieving well above the minimum requirement to major in film and media studies, however, I was sidelined by a circumstance entirely out of the control that completely immobilized me and I am just now coming up for air and hoping that the school can help with my path forward by allowing me to major in film and media studies despite my poor performance in the final project of this course.
