Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Rohan Sachdeva and I am writing to request Aegrotat Standing in CHEM 112 for the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 terms. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to complete all of the required work for this course. However, I completed and passed well over 60% of the required coursework including both final exams. CHEM 112 has a required lab component that involves a written lab report for each in-person lab. It was my understanding that you must attend all labs to pass the course. My lab attendance throughout both terms was perfect and I completed all experiments successfully. However, I failed to submit proof of lab attendance as lab reports for only a few labs, causing me to fail the course.

I want to acknowledge that my experience entering first-year university was not a smooth transition. Throughout the year I struggled immensely with my mental health due to the stress and pressure of a new workload and new environment. I had to learn to balance a multitude of deadlines with my physical health and social life. I had many days that left me not wanting to get out of bed, feeling like I wouldn’t be able to achieve highly no matter how much time and effort I put in. Life Sciences is a program with difficult courses and a demanding workload. The struggles I faced with my mental health made it feel impossible to complete every course element of every class. I got advice from my frosh leader and mentor to prioritize heavily weighted course elements, of which lab reports were not.

Despite my depressive state, I tried to do all of the right things to stay on track. I went to bed on time to show up for my 8:30 am classes on West Campus. I found good healthy food on the meal plan to fuel myself with. I joined the badminton club and went running along the pier to stay active. I met new people in my program and booked rooms for study group. I showed up to every lecture, lab, and tutorial in CHEM 112. Dr. Mombourquette was an engaging and enthusiastic professor who taught me so much in the Fall term. Dr. Horton explained concepts slowly and methodically in a way I could track during the Winter term. I made the time to talk to my TAs in tutorial about concepts that were challenging me. I was motivated to get better and do better, and by the time the Winter term rolled around, I was better.

I put in the work for CHEM 112 but came up short due to a technicality that I missed along the way. Although my lack of attention to detail for this course requirement is completely my fault, I can assure you that my understanding of the course material significantly outweighs the missed component. Once again, I am asking for you to grant me Aegrotat Standing in CHEM 112. With your support, I will be able to enroll in second-year LISC courses, the degree plan which I am currently pursuing. I have no issues with completing outstanding work that I missed to rectify the situation.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Rohan Sachdeva
