Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I hope this message finds you well. My name is Anfel Ghettas, and I am a first-year biology student at Queen's University. I am writing to formally request a waiver of the petition deadline to withdraw for one year. My academic performance during my first year was profoundly affected by extenuating circumstances beyond my control.

Throughout my initial year, I encountered severe personal challenges, including significant family issues and conflicts with my roommates in residence. These challenges persisted throughout the year, greatly hindering my ability to focus on and complete my coursework.

The conflicts with my roommates stemmed from instances of racism and discrimination, which forced me to move twice within two months. The first move placed me in a temporary 'safe space' without WiFi, necessitating that I study outside my temporary room from day till night during my 2023 fall term finals. The second move occurred after winter break, around the time I had to complete a deferred exam. The timing of these moves, combined with follow-up meetings and ongoing conflicts, caused me significant emotional strain, stress, and distraction, ultimately resulting in very low grades.

Moreover, during the 2024 winter term, I experienced numerous family conflicts and accidents, which I find difficult to discuss even now due to their emotional weight. These issues further diverted my attention from my academic responsibilities. To address these family matters, I had to travel to Algeria immediately after my finals for several months, where I had very limited network and service. This is the primary reason I was unable to contact or address my academic probation earlier.

Despite the immense difficulties of my first year abroad and away from my family, I have gained invaluable experiences that have fortified my determination. I am pleased to report that these issues have been resolved, and I am confident they will not impact my academic performance moving forward.

In anticipation of any remaining challenges, I have established a robust support system, including my brother, who will be living with me to ensure my mental stability and safety. I am committed to managing these challenges proactively to ensure they do not affect my studies.

I am deeply committed to improving my academic performance. I plan to utilize university resources such as tutoring services, academic counseling, and study workshops. I am also willing to consider part-time status or seek permission for course enrollment as needed.

Given the circumstances, I kindly request permission for course enrollment. Thank you for your consideration. I am dedicated to continuing my education at Queen's University and am committed to demonstrating significant academic improvement.

Sincerely,

Anfel Ghettas
