Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally request a credit standing in my ECON 255 course (Fall 2023), taught by Professor Jan Zabojnik, due to serious extenuating circumstances that significantly affected my academic performance for the term. I sustained a severe injury, specifically a tear in my adductor muscle, during the football season, which required intensive medical attention and treatment which began in December

I was under the care of Dr. Jason Kobrick for treatment and consultations with Dr. Sean Kings to determine the appropriate course of action for my injury and rehabilitation. The primary treatment involved Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, which are known to be highly painful and stressful procedures. The PRP injection was scheduled the day after my final exam, December 21st, further adding to my anxiety and stress during an already challenging period. Throughout December, I was frequently driving between Oakville and Kingston, a journey of several hours each way, to receive treatment and attend medical consultations. This significant time commitment severely impacted my ability to attend classes, exam review sessions and to dedicate the necessary time to study for my ECON 255 exam. As a result, my preparation for the final exam was inadequate, directly affecting my performance in the course as the final was weighted heavily. Despite these challenges, I made every effort to keep up with my studies, however, the physical pain from the injury, the time-consuming travel for treatments, and the toll on my mental health of dealing with this serious medical situation were beyond my control and severely impacted my ability to perform to my usual academic standards. These circumstances are supported by my consistent performance throughout my academic career, including being on the Dean's Honour List, which reflects my dedication and hard work. The injury and treatment process began in early December and continued until the day after my exam, covering a critical period for exam preparation and completion. Like mentioned previously, during this time I missed multiple classes, review sessions and valuable study hours that would have otherwise allowed me to better prepare for the exam. The stress and anxiety associated with the impending PRP injection further impacted my inability to focus and perform well. Given these significant and uncontrollable challenges, I am kindly requesting a credit standing for ECON 255 (Fall 2023). I previously submitted a petition for STATS 263 under the same circumstances, which was successfully granted. I intended to submit a similar petition for ECON 255 but it appears that it was not submitted. Therefore, I am making a separate submission for ECON 255 now.
