Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally request a retroactive drop of my grade for Psyc 100 for the 2022-2023 fall/winter term. Although I understand that such petitions are typically required within the year the course ended, I was unaware that this option was available to me until recently. I apologize for the delay and hope you will consider my situation, as I believe the circumstances that affected my academic performance were beyond my control and had a significant impact on my ability to succeed in this course.
In early 2023, I found myself dealing with a serious situation involving stalking and harassment from my ex-partner, which resulted in ongoing police involvement. This experience took a substantial toll on my mental health and left me in a vulnerable state throughout the semester. Just before exams, I discovered that a close friend had been sexually exploiting me an a few other females by creating YouTube videos insinuating that we had been involved in intimate situations. This individual also took pictures of me without my knowledge and used them in these videos. The shock and fear I experienced upon learning this were overwhelming, as I had no idea what had been posted online or who in my dorm or at school had seen these images and videos. This discovery left me terrified to leave my room, and I was unable to perform basic tasks such as getting food or showering due to the fear of being seen.
The timing of this revelation, right before my exams, made it impossible for me to write my exams properly. I went MIA for some time, consumed by fear and anxiety, which significantly impacted my ability to concentrate on my studies. Unfortunately, I did not defer my exams at the time because I was afraid that doing so would involve my parents, and I was not prepared to disclose the situation to them.
Now, having had time to heal and regain some stability, I realize that this grade not only reflects a period where I felt extremely vulnerable, but it also continues to affect my academic standing. I would like to request that you consider dropping this grade as it puts me back in that difficult place. As a result of these events, my parents eventually found out, and I am no longer living with them. I can provide supporting documentation if needed. I have been in contact with Rebecca Rappeport from Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Services, who can offer further documentation related to the case. I am also available to discuss my situation in more detail should you require additional information.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my petition. I appreciate your understanding and compassion in this matter.
