Dear Academic Associate Dean,
I am writing this letter as an academic petition to extend my IN grade in Math 121, where which I will be writing the final exam in December 2024.
An extenuating circumstance beyond my control that arose in March of 2023 continued to worsen due to events taking place towards the end of Fall 2023 and beginning of Winter 2024, making it very difficult for me to continue and keep up. Over the summer of 2024, a situation arose resulting in me leaving the country and changing therapists multiple times.
Knowing that I am an individual who pushes myself and strives for success, it was disappointing to see the effects of this circumstance on my life, specifically my academic life. Due to the previous struggles that I have experienced which resulted in me having to drop a full year course last year at the last minute, this incident has made it harder to manage tasks. Having the extra time to prepare for this exam would still allow me to excel in the course. I have always struggled with my mental health, making the circumstance adding a lot more stress on me throughout the term.
I have spoken to an Academic Advisor, my parents, and have been getting support from the SVPR office as well. I am also seeking professional help in order to get back on track and excel in the upcoming terms, and will be continuing counseling throughout the year in order to get the right support I need. My instructor also understands and has given me the green flag to write the exam in December. I am committed to properly managing my coursework and plan on continuing to seek support from my academic advisor and the SVPR office, as well as work with SASS. These steps and actions will help me improve my future and ensure that I get the right support needed while doing what is best for myself.
Regards,
Harsheta Taneja
