Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Petition Office,
I am writing to formally submit a petition for a late course drop for ENGL 114, ARTH 120B, and SOCY 122B, due to extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my academic performance throughout the 2023-2024 academic year.
Over the past year, I experienced severe and ongoing mental health crises, including multiple hospitalizations for a suicide attempt and mental health emergencies, which affected my ability to keep up with my courses. In addition to these mental health challenges, I suffer from chronic migraines that occur more than 20 times a month. These ongoing health issues made it impossible for me to focus on my academic responsibilities, resulting in a significant decline in my performance in the courses mentioned above.
The challenges I faced were not limited to the academic year but continued into the summer of 2024, during which I continued to experience severe mental health crises. I frequently sought help from emergency services, my family doctor, and mental health professionals. These circumstances have prevented me from being able to address the course drop petition earlier, as I was continuously dealing with the effects of these crises.
I actively sought support throughout this period from Student Care in Gordon Hall, the mental health counselors at Queen's, and Student Wellness Services. I was also in regular contact with QSAS, who are familiar with my situation and can provide supporting documentation as I spoke to Alan Jeans. Additionally, my family doctor can provide medical documentation to confirm the nature of my health challenges. I would also like to note that Solita Sipkens, my mental health therapist at Queen’s Student Wellness, has worked closely with me during these crises and can further verify the impact these issues had on my academic performance.
Given that my circumstances have been ongoing and beyond my control, I respectfully request that the committee waive the one-year deadline to allow this petition to be heard. The continuous nature of my mental health challenges, which extended into the summer months, made it impossible for me to act sooner. I hope that the committee will take these extenuating circumstances into account in reviewing my petition.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration. I am prepared to provide all necessary documentation and appreciate your time in reviewing this petition.
Sincerely,
Ahasan Jaigirder
