Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whomever it May Concern,

I am petitioning to be added to BIOL 401 past the deadline because I was on the waitlist for said course for several weeks. Last week, the instructor of the course reached out to me to let me know that there is a spot available in the course if I still wished to take it. I agreed, and began preparing for the course. However, at the time I had not realized I needed to enroll in the course by myself via Solus and had incorrectly assumed my professor and/or the Biology department would add me in, since I was not on the waitlist for that particular section of the course. At the time, I did not understand how Solus would allow me to swap sections, having already been on a waitlist. My instructor informed me yesterday that I was not yet enrolled in the course. I reached out to both him and the Biology Undergraduate office to seek assistance, then was advised to make a petition.

The reason I would like to be in this course is because I wish to gain more practical experience working in a Biology related lab. When I graduate I aspire to pursue a career in research as well as graduate school, and an advanced level course would well prepare me for the road ahead. Additionally, to me, being in a lab is the most educational, keystone, and fundamental aspect of a Queen's Biology degree. It would mean a lot to me as an aspiring scientist to be able to have this opportunity to hone my technical skills and to gain more advanced understandings of Biological research. The hands-on experience is invaluable and would positively affect not only my education, but also my career and aspirations.

Thank you for your consideration,

Ashley Gifford

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If permitted to be enrolled in this course, I would strive to do my very best. I have been preparing for this lab course and my instructor has provided me with the information I need to be successful in the course. I have also taken relevant courses in my undergraduate degree, and the skills I have gained from the early years of my degree would prove highly beneficial when applied into this course. I am a highly motivated and determined individual, and as such I believe in always striving for the best performance possible, be that in a lab or in a seminar. I have excellent time management and organizational skills, and always complete assignments well before the due date. In prior lab courses, I always ensure I come to the lab prepared and that I feel confident in my abilities to perform the experiment/procedure.

For this course in particular, I have already completed several of the safety and course expectation manuals, in addition to reviewing related concepts in physiology that will be applied in the lab setting. I have familiarized myself with the course outline, assignments, and have discussed with the professor how I can get caught up on minor quizzes I have missed in the past 2 weeks.
