Petition Letter: Petition to Waive Deadline for Pass Option on ECON110
Dear Members of the Board of Studies,

I am writing to respectfully request a waiver of the deadline for selecting the Pass option for ECON110, a course I completed during the Winter 2022 term. Unfortunately, I was unable to meet the original deadline due to significant extenuating circumstances, which I will explain in this letter. Despite submitting two prior petitions, one for a late course drop and another to cancel a withdrawal from school. This specific issue was not addressed at the time due to my focus on recovering from both physical and emotional challenges that arose during this period.

In October 2021, I faced an unexpected personal situation that profoundly affected both my physical and mental health. I experienced a medical emergency that resulted in a surgery, followed by a deeply troubling personal relationship issue. The emotional impact of these events led me to withdraw from social and academic engagement, which resulted in my academic probation. My priority at the time was simply to stabilize my academic standing and focus on my recovery, which led me to submit petitions that were more urgent to my immediate academic survival.

However, the option to convert the ECON110 grade to Pass was unfortunately overlooked, as I was dealing with the trauma of the events and the mental toll they had taken on me. I had neither the clarity nor the energy to fully understand the implications of that grade on my long-term academic performance at the time. It was only after I began recovering and refocusing on my academic goals that I realized how significantly this grade has impacted my CGPA, which is essential for my future plans to apply for a master’s program.

Although I submitted other petitions during this period, my decision-making was driven by the immediate pressures I was facing. At the time, I could only focus on managing the most urgent academic issues, such as probation and the withdrawal process. As a result, I missed the opportunity to address the Pass option for ECON110.

I hope the Board will consider my situation and the fact that I was not in the mental or physical state to properly address the Pass option during the initial deadline. I am now on track to graduate by summer 2025, and I believe that this waiver will allow me to continue my progress without having to retake a year-long course, which would delay my graduation and disrupt my academic plan.

To support my petition, I am providing documentation, including medical records and personal statements from those who supported me during this challenging time, that verify the severity of my circumstances and the timeline in which they occurred.
