Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Matthew Morrow, I am a third-year student in Life Sciences at Queen’s. I am writing to request an exemption from the 6.0 unit limit for study abroad programs, specifically for my upcoming exchange in which I plan to attend Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
This exchange presents a rare and invaluable opportunity for me to not only dive into new areas of study, but discover the profound cultural and educational opportunities overseas. While I am studying sciences at Queen’s, I find myself at a crossroads, very unsure of what my next steps may be career-wise. I am extremely hopeful to participate in certain courses at UAB which will not only support my major, but expand my knowledge in various fields and allow me to study subjects that are highly interdisciplinary. This will offer a new and broader perspective of different fields of study, work, and global issues. These courses include:
Politics of the Developing World
Spanish Contemporary Art
Urban Interventions: Graffiti & Public Sculpture
Intercultural Communication
Modernism
I fully understand the new regulations limit students to 6.0 units, and while this is practical in most circumstances, I believe this would restrict my ability to fully capitalize on this unique academic experience and hinder my academic progress towards a degree here at Queen’s. I have explored numerous course options and have carefully chosen these due to their diversity and their unique contributions to my overall development, both in relation to my major, and in exploring new fields. I believe taking a full 15.0 unit course load will not only continue progressing my studies and enhance my learning but will also equip me with critical soft-skills in today’s globally interconnected world.
