Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Hi there, my name is Grace MacLauchlan, and I'm a third-year student here at Queen's. I am writing to formally petition for approval to take more than the standard 6.0-unit limit while studying abroad at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). As part of my academic development, this study abroad opportunity represents a unique and invaluable experience. I am eager to make the most of it by enrolling in additional coursework to enhance my learning and future career prospects. Taking an entire semester will ensure I am not behind in the credits I need to complete my degree. I have researched the courses offered at UAB extensively and am confident they will significantly complement and enrich my current curriculum.
I understand that the standard course load for study abroad programs is limited to 6.0 units to ensure students can balance their academic and personal responsibilities in a new and unfamiliar environment. However, I want to assure you of my confidence in managing an increased workload effectively. I have consistently demonstrated strong time management, dedication, and academic performance throughout my academic career. Throughout my years at Queen’s, I have been working hard to improve my marks and overall academic performance, and my transcript has reflected this.
The courses I am interested to enroll in are:
-Politics of the Developing World
-Spanish of Contemporary Art
-Urban Interventions: Graffiti and Public Sculpture
-Intercultural Communication
-Modernism
In summary, I respectfully request approval to take more than 6.0 units during my study abroad program at UAB. This additional coursework will significantly enhance my academic experience and contribute to my educational and professional goals. I am fully prepared to take on the extra responsibilities and am confident I can thrive in this environment.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Grace

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: After the semester of Fall 2024, these are the credits I still need:
-24.0 units of SOCY courses
-15.0 units of electives
-9.0 units of commerce courses (to complete business certificate)
The five courses I am interested in taking at UAB will fulfill all my remaining elective requirements, leaving me with no electives to complete for graduation. After that, I will have 24.0 units of SOCY classes and 9.0 units of commerce courses left. I plan to take two commerce courses (Intro to Finance and Entrepreneurship) over the summer, leaving me with just one more commerce course to complete in the fall. For the SOCY courses, I intend to take four classes in the first semester and another four in the second semester, allowing me to have a lighter course load in the second semester.
Strategies for Success:
To succeed academically, I will prioritize effective time management through a structured schedule and task prioritization. Active participation in class and group projects will help deepen my understanding and build valuable connections. Joining study groups will offer collaborative learning and different perspectives on course material. I will also consult professors regularly for feedback and guidance. Finally, maintaining a balanced lifestyle by managing stress and staying active will ensure sustained focus and overall well-being.
