Petition Letter: To whom it may concern:
Hi, my name is Sophia Coens, and I am currently enrolled at Queens University as a 4th year Drama major. As a student, I strive to achieve and maintain an excellent GPA. My academic career is of utmost importance to me. My academic transcripts will reflect this. Since March 2023, I have been battling with a serious health issue, which has drained me physically, emotionally and mentally. I am under the care of my family physician and continue to undergo medical procedures as needed. This health issue has presented many challenges to me as a student, but I continued to apply myself to my studies, and being able to live at home with my family, who offer me support, has enabled me to complete my academic courses.
I was enrolled in DRAM 247 Winter 2024 and completed 32 of the required hours volunteering with Council of Ontario Drama and Dance Educators in March 2024. To fulfill the remaining hours, I auditioned for multiple shows, but was not offered a part. So, I spoke to Clelia Scala, my Drama 247 professor, and she sent me an Incomplete form to sign until I found a way to get the remaining 16 hours. Then, Clelia connected me with Victoria Marmulak who is the Production Manager for the fall major, The Other Shore. In July 2024, I began to complete the remaining hours. I completed my hours at the end of August and sent Victoria my doc the following week. I waited for a response from Victoria and did not receive one, so I emailed her on September 21st and did not receive a response until September 26th. As a result of the miscommunication and the stress associated with my ongoing health issue, I missed the submission deadline for my completed hours which was September 15th and did not email my hours to Clelia until September 16th. Upon response from Victoria on September 26, Clelia emailed me and said that she was concerned that she would no longer be able to submit the grade. She then connected me with the Undergraduate Chair, Colleen Renihan to discuss my situation. I met with Colleen today and I explained the stressful circumstance that I am facing, and she suggested that I should apply for an Academic Petition or Appeal regarding a request for an extension of an incomplete grade.
If you require a doctor’s note, I will be happy to provide one for you.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
