Dear Petitions Committee,
I am writing to request permission to take a 9.0-unit course load next semester during my study abroad at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). I believe an increased course load will allow me to fully engage with the interdisciplinary offerings at Carlos III, enriching my academic foundation in applied economics while expanding my understanding of fields that complement it. This unique opportunity combines academic rigor with personal growth, positioning me to navigate the complex challenges of a globalized economy and to build skills essential to my holistic development.
The business-oriented nature of the courses I am interested in taking will provide insights into the regulatory, operational, and strategic foundations that influence economic systems, connecting theoretical economic concepts to real-world applications in areas like workforce dynamics, organizational structures, and market logistics. This broader perspective is invaluable in rounding out my economics degree, allowing me to approach complex economic issues with a well-informed, multidisciplinary lens that bridges both theory and practice.
While my primary motivation is academic, the experience at Carlos III offers a profound opportunity for well-rounded personal and professional growth. Embracing an expanded course load in this dynamic international setting will allow me to deepen essential skills such as time management, resilience, and adaptability while cultivating a mindset that values balance and reflection. Immersing myself in a diverse curriculum within a new environment, I’ll be refining my ability to navigate complex situations with flexibility and purpose—a quality that will support me both in my academic journey and beyond.
The international community at Carlos III further enriches this opportunity, providing a platform for meaningful cross-cultural learning. Engaging with students from varied backgrounds, I’ll gain a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives and ways of thinking. This diversity will not only enhance my communication and collaboration skills but also foster a more nuanced understanding of global interconnectedness. By embracing these varied insights, I am confident that I will grow into a more thoughtful and adaptable individual, prepared to make meaningful contributions in today’s increasingly interconnected world.
Completing this expanded course load during my study abroad also allows me to return to Queen’s University with a regular course load next year. This approach will provide me with the flexibility to give each course focused time and attention, enabling me to engage in extracurricular and professional activities that reinforce my academic goals and practical skills. Managing my academic journey in this way ensures that I am equipped to approach my final year at Queen’s University with a balanced, purpose-driven focus.
Thank you for considering my petition. I am committed to making the most of my study abroad experience at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and I would greatly appreciate your support in approving this expanded course load, which aligns closely with my academic and personal goals.
Sincerely,
Seth Ronen

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: To support my success with an expanded 9.0-unit course load during my study abroad at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), I have structured a plan that incorporates well-defined goals and strategies across three areas: my course of study, workload management, and resources for success.
My goal for this study abroad semester is to enhance my applied economics major with interdisciplinary insights, providing a comprehensive understanding of the systems that influence economic trends, preparing me to approach my field with an adaptable and well-rounded perspective. This course selection aligns with my academic goals and adds valuable dimensions to my skillset, ultimately supporting my long-term professional aspirations.
I plan to leverage various resources to support both my academic performance and personal well-being:
Regular Faculty and Advisor Interaction: I will attend office hours, seek guidance from UC3M professors on complex topics, and stay in communication with the academic advisors available at Queen’s University.
