Petition Letter

Petition Letter: On October 28, I contacted my accessibility advisor to request the use of a memory aid for my midterms, which I require due to my disability. However, I was informed that the accomodation was not included in my accessibility report, and my request was subsequently denied.

Unfortunately, this situation negatively impacted my grade, as the accomodation would have significantly supported my performance. Additionionally, I did not receive a timely response from the advisor. Had I been informed earlier, I would have withdrawn from the course, thus avoiding a DR notation on my transcript.

To clarify my entitlement to this accomodation, I reached out to my speech-language pathologist, who originally provided the documentation. They confirmed that I am indeed eligible for the memory aid support. As I advance in my studies, I will continue to require updated recommendations to reflect my needs accurately. I believe the memory aid was essential for my midterms and will be crucial for future assessments as well.

Please see attached supporting documentation from the speech-language pathologist and academic advisor.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: While I am disappointed by this outcome, I am determined to successfully retake organic chemistry. I plan to enroll in the course during the next academic year, as I will not have the opportunity to retake it this following semester, as it is not offered in Winter 2025. With proper accommodations, I am confident that I can succeed in this course. In the mean time, I feel it would be unfair to see a DR notation on my transcript if this accommodation hadn’t been denied.
Unfortunately, I face the ongoing challenge of lexical retrieval disorder, a severe condition that significantly impacts my studies. This condition has created barriers to my academic success, making it essential for me to have access to accomodations tailored to my needs. I deeply understand the importance of these supports in leveling the playing field and recnognize their critical role throughout my post-secondary education.

I am fully committed to advocating for myself and persistently seeking the resources and assistance necessary to achieve my academic goals. Accomodations such as memory aids are not merely tools but essential supports-my crutches-which helps me overcome some hurdles that I live with my disability. With these aids, I can fully engage with my coursework and demonstrate my potential as a capable and hardworking student.

I strongly believe in my ability to succeed in university, as evidenced by my determination and perseverance. With the right accomodations in place, I can achieve the future I deserve. I respectfully request that my petition be considered, as the approval of these accomodation will be instrumental in ensuring my academic success and allowing me to reach my full potential.

Once again, this petition is a request the removal of the DR notation on my transcript for CHEM 281.

Thank you for your consideration. I am happy to provide additional documentation.
