Dear Associate Dean, Academic,
My name is Mikaela Naumann and I am writing this appeal to request CR standing in Math 121 completed during the Spring Summer 2024 term due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control as I completed the course work but earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected.
I began my studies in the Fall of 2019 and met with many challenges including the pandemic, my medical disability, anxiety disorder and learning disabilities. Because of these complication factor, I have used strategies of lower course loads, and semester breaks. This past summer, I was registered in two courses to meet some final degree requirements. The First was a condensed upper year Biology field course to Kenya, in which I was very successful, and the second was Math 121 to meet the final first year requirements. I expected, and planned, for the challenge in getting a late start to Math 121 as the biology would take me out of the country for the first few weeks. Upon return, I experience physical illness in addition to a flare up of my chronic documented mental health issues and struggled to get up to speed and was able to complete the course and receive a passing grade. I am requesting a CR to represent that all course material was covered and passed and strength of the concepts complete.
I am excited to be completing my BHSc this fall so I did not choose to drop this course as it would not be available in full again until next summer, thus further extending my studies. Currently I have been speaking to a couple of professors and am encouraged to be applying for my Masters next fall in the biology department and do not want this low grade to compromise my success in this area.
I have been registered with QSAS and appreciated accommodations over the past years and have adjusted my long-term goals accordingly. Also, over the past several months, I have been working diligently with my medical specialists, support systems and new technology to ensure my long-term health and success and am pleased that my physical heath is stable and my physician’s are pleased with the progress, giving me the motivation and confidence to be personally successful and a valuable contributor to both my chosen area of study as well as my classmates professors.
