Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: This letter is addressed to the Associate Dean of the Arts and science Faculty.
I (Danielle Abusow) am appealing to have Math 111(Fall/Winter 2014/2015) removed from my academic transcript.
I originally took the course because 6 units of math was required for my environmental science degree. I understand it is past the 21 days the grades were posted, however, a decision was only reached for my grade this week (June 15-19 2015.) This can be confirmed through Dr. Alison Gobel of the environmental science department and Dr. Peter Taylor of the math department.
I had not taken a math course since 2011 in high school and it is something I greatly struggle with, but I thought I would attempt it as part of a learning experience in university and to put it towards my only necessary math requirement for environmental science. Going into the class I previously worked with a tutor to help me prepare for it over the summer and I had a Gaels varsity tutor throughout the course of the year, and went to Professor Taylor for help numerous times. I completed all assignments but I struggled greatly with testing.
This course, in combination with the pressure to perform as an elite level athlete after returning from surgery in the summer of 2014, along with other external factors happening at home, such as financial issues and my new born nephew ending up in the hospital in January, caused me to be stressed to the point where trying to do math and especially math testing, or any testing caused me severe anxiety issues. I was unable to leave my room the majority of the time and began missing classes in the winter semester because of anxiety attacks. I also had severe fatigue issues from over-training syndrome which causes symptoms of depression. This course requires a lot of attention that I was unable to provide for it no matter how much I did try to get help for it.
I did seek counseling several times through Queen¿¿s HDCS and used a crisis appointment, who can confirm all of this as well. I also tried learning strategies. Although I knew I should probably drop the course I am not someone who gives up because of a bad grade, and my math Professor Peter Taylor was very kind, and tried very hard to pass me but was not successful in being able to. This math 111 mark which will not be put towards my degree, as I am planning on transferring to the arts side of environmental studies. Math 111 is now left on my transcript as a failed course affecting my GPA, which is now interfering with my athletic eligibility for the upcoming year, as well as my eligibility for receiving OSAP. If I am unable to receive OSAP because of this one course I do not think I will be capable of continuing my academic studies at Queen¿¿s. I am in Kingston for the summer and I am willing to meet with anyone necessary to further explain why this grade should be removed from my academic transcript if necessary.
