Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing to respectfully petition the Faculty's decision regarding STAT252 (2024 Fall), requesting an Extended Incomplete to allow for a second deferral of the final exam.
At the beginning of December, I fell ill with a cold and fever. Initially, I did not take the symptoms seriously, but my condition gradually worsened, leading me to request a deferred exam for STAT252. Afterward, I returned home to be with my family, but my illness further deteriorated, and I was diagnosed with viral pneumonia. This ultimately required hospitalization.On January 5, I was allowed to be discharged from the hospital. However, there were still some obvious sequelae and pneumonia caused a minor recurrence of my cardiac problems that had been under control. Based on these condition, the hospital recommended an additional three weeks of rest following discharge.
After discharge, I was prescribed multiple medications for my respiratory sequelae and cardiac problems. These required me to allocate substantial time for rest each day. Fortunately, the lighter workload during the first two weeks of term allowed me to manage my academic responsibilities. With rest and regular medication, my respiratory symptoms began to improve after about a week. However, the combination of medications often caused side effects such as headaches and nausea, which made it difficult for me to concentrate.
Given that the STAT252 exam was scheduled for January 18th, I decided to stop taking my medications on January 17th and 18th to avoid these side effects affecting my performance. While I initially felt fine on the 17th, I began experiencing noticeable chest tightness, shortness of breath, and some heart discomfort by midday on the 18th. I promptly resumed my medication, but by the afternoon, I developed a low-grade fever. By 7:00 PM, I was still experiencing fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. Considering these symptoms and fearing that the stress and exertion of the exam might worsen my heart condition, I made the difficult decision not to attend the7:00 PM STAT252 exam.
