Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally request permission to add the course PHIL 151: Introduction to Philosophy to my schedule for this semester, despite having missed the official deadline to do so. I understand that the deadline for adding courses has passed, but I would like to explain my unique circumstances and the deep interest I have in taking this course.

I had been away for the first few weeks of the semester, as I traveled to India to care for my grandmother, who is seriously ill. My return to campus occurred after the add/drop deadline, and I was unable to finalize my course selection in time. I sincerely apologize for this oversight and the inconvenience it may cause.

I am currently enrolled in all core courses for my program in commerce, but I am eager to broaden my academic horizons and deepen my intellectual engagement by taking this philosophy course. Philosophy has long been a personal interest of mine, stemming from my upbringing in India, where I was influenced by the philosophical and spiritual traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism. I have spent much of my high school years and personal time exploring these ideas through reading and reflection. I believe taking PHIL 151 will not only expand my educational experience beyond my primary field of study but also deepen my understanding of the philosophical ideas that have shaped my cultural background.

I have already reached out to the course instructor, Professor Nancy Salay, and she has kindly indicated her support for my request, contingent on the approval of the faculty. I would be very grateful if you would consider granting me an exception to enroll in the course, as I am passionate about the subject and committed to succeeding in it. I believe that this course will be an enriching addition to my academic journey.

I understand that exceptions to the deadline are not granted lightly, and I truly appreciate your consideration of my request. I am happy to discuss this further or provide any additional information you may need. Thank you for your time and understanding, and I look forward to your response.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If granted the permission to enroll, I already have a plan in place to successfully manage this course alongside my other academic commitments. I’ve thought carefully about how I can handle the added workload and continue to excel in all my courses.

Firstly, I already created a detailed schedule to ensure that I stay on top of both my core courses and PHIL 151. I recognize that philosophy is a subject that requires consistent reading and reflection, so I will set aside specific times each week to focus solely on the philosophy course. I will also make sure to review my lecture notes and readings regularly, so I am well-prepared for class and assignments.

In addition to managing my time effectively, I will make use of the resources available to support my success. I plan to attend Professor Salay’s office hours regularly and participate in study groups if they are offered. Engaging with my peers and the professor will help deepen my understanding of the material and ensure I am meeting the course’s expectations.
