Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to formally petition to drop SOCY211 (Lecture - 6016, Lab - 6023) and enroll in GNDS215 (Lecture - 4758, Lab - 4762 as the primary choice and 4761 as a backup option) despite having missed the deadline for course changes. I kindly request your consideration of my extenuating circumstances as outlined below.

On January 16 and 17, 2025, I was unable to attend classes or engage with my coursework due to a medical illness. I have attached a medical note from my family doctor, Dr. Jordan Littman, of the Barrhaven IDEAL Clinic to support my statement. This illness significantly impacted my ability to evaluate my courses and make necessary adjustments by the deadline as I had originally intended.

While I plan to take SOCY211 or an equivalent statistics course at some point in the future, I have realized that the course does not align with my academic and personal needs this term. Furthermore, as a Gender Studies major, GNDS215 would better complement my program requirements and personal academic goals for this semester. The delay in recognizing the need for this change was directly influenced by my illness during this critical period, and I kindly request your understanding and approval to facilitate this late course adjustment.

If my petition is granted, I will diligently apply myself to catching up in GNDS215 to ensure my academic success moving forward. I have already made an effort by attending this week’s lecture and obtaining lecture notes from multiple friends of mine who are enrolled in the course. I am fully committed to catching up on the coursework and making a meaningful contribution to the class.

I would also like to highlight that I have received support from both the course instructor, Katherine Mazurok, and the Gender Studies Undergraduate Chair, Elizabeth Brulé, as evidenced by the correspondence documentation I’ve provided.

Thank you for considering my request. I appreciate your understanding and look forward to your decision.

Sincerely,
Jessica

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If my petition to drop SOCY211 for GNDS215 is granted, I am fully committed to making the necessary adjustments to ensure my academic success moving forward. As mentioned previously, I fully intend to take SOCY211 or an equivalent statistics course in the future prior to my graduation. I have already begun attending GNDS215 lectures and have many peers in the course who have graciously offered help to catch me up on any material I may have missed in the first few weeks. Additionally, I have reviewed the syllabus and familiarized myself with the class’s progress, and I feel confident in my ability to catch up and stay aligned with the course progression. I have also been in contact with the course instructor, who supports my late enrollment, and I hope to maintain open communication with them to best integrate myself into the course.

To avoid similar issues in the future, I plan to prioritize my health and seek out timely support from health professionals to ensure that personal challenges do not interfere with my studies.

Once again, thank you for your consideration, I sincerely appreciate your time and attention.
