Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,

My name is Stella Zed, and I’m writing to you about adding classes after the add deadline. For the reasons of my permanent QSAS accommodations, very distressing family issues, and my best friend’s mother hospitalized and now only having 3 days to live, I wasn’t able to enroll in courses for this winter 2025 semester by the deadline. I am very keen on joining “PHIL 242 - History of Moral Philosophy”, “PHIL 296 - Animals and Society”, and “PHIL 314 - Creativity”. I would be very grateful for your support and understanding.

Kind regards,

Stella

Appeal Grounds

Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
  • The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
    • Follow the university rules and regulations in a way that supported your right to a fair process.
Appeal Grounds Details: I am appealing on the grounds that the Associate Dean's reasoning for their decision to deny my appeal to add a course after the academic deadline is not logical, and isn't supported by facts.

Appeal Letter

Appeal Letter: I have permanent QSAS accommodations, and that was completed disregarded. The reason of my QSAS accommodations is private. Also, my best friend's mother being hospitalized and expected to die within days and serious family issues is very real, and has taken a serious toll on me. I didn't appreciate the lack of understanding. The associate dean suggested I speak with someone, but I have a support system, hence why I was able to get permanent QSAS accommodations, and the whole point of making an appeal is to get accommodation for valid reasoning. Is my permanent QSAS accommodations and best friend's dying mother not valid? On what grounds? The Associate Dean mentioned some classes in my past term that I didn't successfully complete as part of the reasoning to not join now. I have put in a separate academic appeal to late drop those two courses with the advice and support of my QSAS advisor and instructors of those 2 courses. More importantly, this is not logical because regardless of the decision of the associate dean for that petition to late drop those courses, I have to complete my degree. I must keep moving forward, and I have a support system and permanent QSAS accommodations put in place for this very reason: so that uncontrolled events in my life don’t stop me from being able to successfully complete my degree. Additionally, I have overcome the obstacles that were stalling me, hence why I am trying to enroll now, and couldn't before. I also got permission from both course instructors to join their class at this time. I feel better now, the instructors of the two courses see no issue in the timing, and my support system confirms that I am ready now. I am ready and motivated to do my best work. I would be very grateful for your support and understanding.
