Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally request a credit replacement (CR) for CLST 205, taken during the Fall 2024 term, due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control. On August 31, I suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture while playing football here at Queen's. This required surgical repair on September 9, followed by an intense and ongoing rehabilitation process that significantly affected my ability to manage the demands of this course. Following surgery, I was placed in a walking boot and could not walk for several weeks, which made attending class extremely difficult and caused me to miss the first test. As a result, my second test became cumulative and was worth 50% of my final grade. This created an incredibly unfair situation: not only was I recovering from major surgery and dealing with severe pain and mobility challenges, but I was also expected to prepare for double the amount of material compared to my classmates. While other students were tested on a regular portion of content in manageable intervals, I was forced to learn the combined content of both Test 1 and Test 2, with 50% of my final grade riding on a single test, all while recovering from surgery and managing the side effects of strong painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. These medications left me constantly lethargic, mentally foggy, and unable to focus for long periods, making studying, retaining information, and preparing for such a large, high-pressure test nearly impossible.
On top of the physical recovery and medication side effects, I also had to travel back to Oakville multiple times for follow-up appointments with my surgeon, which further cut into my study time. Meanwhile, I was attending several hours of physiotherapy each week in Kingston at QMed, which added another layer of exhaustion and time commitment on top of my already difficult situation. Despite all these challenges, I was able to manage my other courses with the support of academic accommodations and maintained strong performance, which I believe is a testament to my work ethic and academic ability even under extremely difficult circumstances. To support this petition, I have included letters from my head physiotherapist, Evan Knapp-Fisher, and my surgeon, Dr. Danny Aurora, who can both verify the extent of my injury, the demands of my recovery, and the impact on my academic term.
Given these exceptional circumstances, I am respectfully requesting a credit replacement for CLST 205. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you require any additional information or documentation.
