Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Bob Limieux,
My name is Isabel Geiger (student #20401229). I am submitting a formal petition letter to request that the PSYC 271 final exam I was unable to take on December 19, 2024 be deferred to the Winter 2025 term due to a mental health crisis I suffered during the fall 2024 semester.
I was recently diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and ADD. Medications and counselling support were in place to help me. Unfortunately in November 2024, despite my best efforts to manage and adjust to my new diagnosis and medications, I suffered side effects such as fatigue, nausea, dizziness, lack of concentration and extreme depression which worsened during the exam period. This breaking point was debilitating both physically and mentally. It prevented me from adequately preparing for and taking the final PSYC 271 exam on December 19, 2024.
Becky Haist, my Queens athletics counsellor, recommended that I defer the PSYC 271 exam and return home early to Vancouver, BC for an extended rest and recovery period. Although it was suggested that I remain in Vancouver for the entirety of the Winter semester, I decided to return to Queens on January 20, 2025 to complete my second term with proper support in place and a reduced course load. My hope was also to be granted permission to write the missed PSYC 271 final exam in April 2025.
By reducing my course load, meeting with my mental health counselor regularly, adjusting my medication and being more mindful of my health and wellness, I have been able to stay on top of my current course load and training as a varsity athlete during this Winter 2025 semester.
Thank you for your time, compassion, understanding and consideration of my petition. I am committed to my academic success and hope you will find my request reasonable and grant me the opportunity to write the PSYC 271 final exam this Winter semester. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. You may also have my authorization to connect with my counsellor, Becky Haist at rh110@queensu.ca.
Best regards,
Isabel Geiger
