Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

I am appealing to waive the 21-day deadline for the appeal to late drop a course.

First, I would like to inform you that I became ill with a serious illness at the beginning the winter semester of this year. This illness is well documented and I have had the full support and help of my doctors. I was hospitalized for a severe infection which required weeks of IV therapy.

It was my full intention to complete Math 121 in the winter term of this year, however, my illness disabled me from doing coursework through this term. I have communicated with my professors throughout this time about arranging possible ways to mitigate this problem. I wished to begin working as soon as I was able in order to complete the courses.

When it was clear I was going to be unable to complete my full course load both my mother and I had several interactions with David Youssef over the phone and by email. He contacted my professors to assist me in trying to complete at least two of my courses. He told me that I would have to work the plan out with my professors. I contacted him again on several occasions when I was unable to make a plan with my math professor.

I found that communication with my Math 121 professor to be very challenging at times. When I felt able to begin work I requested information from him on how I might rejoin the online class. There were long delays in responding. On many occasions when I thought a resolution was being made I would not hear back for a length of time. The last communication I received from Professor Ableson (Math121 prof) was May 5th and I replied the same day. Since the previous emails I had sent took him a length of time for a reply, I thought no different after sending this one. I believed that I would just have to wait for a reply, as I was sure he and I would be able to solve this issue. I did not hear from him at all after this, which caused me to miss the 21-day drop deadline. Thus, I did not appeal for a drop on time. I have received no further communication. I have enclosed the emails I received from him. At this point I am sure I will not be able to complete the course this summer. I certainly cannot hope to do the course with no guidance from faculty.

I hope that I have provided clear and logical explanations for my request to waive the 21-day deadline to appeal for a late drop. If there is any more information or documentation that I can provide to be of help please do not hesitate to contact me.

Academic Plan

I was unable to complete my year at Queen¿¿s because of serious illness. I am hoping to resume full-time studies in the fall semester. The nature of my illness was a serious infection and septicemia so there should be no residual physical or emotional reasons why I cannot resume my studies. I hope this is sufficiently clear.
