Subject: Petition for Credit Standing in PSYC 221

Dear Dean,

I am writing to formally request Credit Standing (CR) for my PSYC 221 course this semester due to the significant disruptions caused by the PSAC 901 strike. These disruptions have directly affected my ability to fairly demonstrate my academic abilities in this course.

One of the most impactful changes due to the strike has been the cancellation of the second midterm exam, which was originally worth 25% of my grade, and a 3% assignment. This has resulted in a substantial restructuring of the course grading scheme, with my final exam now accounting for 66% of my final grade. Additionally, this exam has been changed to a multiple-choice format, which I do not believe fully captures my comprehension of the course material. This shift has created an uneven and stressful evaluation structure that does not accurately reflect my efforts and knowledge in the course.

Furthermore, my first midterm grade, which was originally a smaller component of my overall mark, is now weighted more heavily due to these changes. I received a 64% on this midterm, and I had anticipated opportunities to improve my grade through additional assignments and the second midterm. With those opportunities removed, my academic standing in this course is disproportionately impacted by circumstances beyond my control.

This situation constitutes an “unusual academic event” as defined in the petition guidelines. The strike, an external factor completely beyond my control, has significantly altered the learning environment and assessment structure. While I have continued to engage with course materials and prepare to the best of my ability, the revised grading scheme does not provide a fair evaluation of my overall performance.

Given these extenuating circumstances, I respectfully request that my grade for PSYC 221 be changed to Credit Standing (CR). This adjustment would allow me to maintain progress in my academic program without an unfair reflection of my abilities on my transcript.

I appreciate your time and consideration of this request. I have also been informed by my professor that they will support any petitions made for this course. Please let me know if any additional information is required.

Sincerely, Lura Panesar
