Associate Dean (Studies)
Queens University

I am writing to you to request consideration to waive the 21 day appeal deadline in order to formally request a waiver to withdraw from the programe for a period of one year.

Upon completion of my 2015 fall term I began working my summer job in Northern Ontario which began on May 17 2015. I was unaware of my situation until July 6, 2015 at which point I was trying to generate a letter of enrollment to prepare my financing for the upcoming year. Upon contacting student services I was informed that an email was sent to me on or around May 25, 2015 advising me of my situation. This email was not received. I have checked back on all of my Queens emails (12mjn@queeensu.ca) dating back to the middle of May and nowhere can this document be found. Furthermore I have searched my Solus account and am unable to find this document anywhere. I also checked with my family to see if the letter might have be mailed to my home address and found that nothing was received there. The only item found was in the hold section a note which states Req to withdraw for one year which is not time or date stamped. The first opportunity given to me to review the letter was on July 10, 2015 when it was emailed to me by Ms. Haley Everson. I really had no reason to access my Solus account prior to this date. I am requesting this waiver as it is my intent to appeal your decision in order that I may put forward documentation in order to be reconsidered for readmission.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I eagerly await your response

The Request

The intent of this letter is to formally appeal the universities decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of one year based on my academic performance. I will outline significant circumstances that caused my academic success to decline and will also discuss my plans on moving forward at Queen¿¿s if my appeal is hopefully to be granted.

Explanation of Personal Circumstances

While attending Queen¿¿s over the past three years I believe that there have been multiple instances where significant varied circumstances have had a direct impact not only on my academics, but also, my mental health. I believe that these personal events were out of my control and were the leading causes to my decline in my academic performance.

When I began my first semester of Queen¿¿s in 2012, I was seventeen years old and was already dealing with issues related to anxiety and depression. I had begun making improvements with these issues but in October of 2012 I dealt with the loss of close friend of mine who had died tragically. It was the first time that I had dealt directly with the situation of death and was truly unable to cope with the loss. I found it extremely challenging to cope with school at this point and it truly led to a decline in my academics. I had begun having relapses with my anxiety and it was extremely challenging for me to get through each day. A month later I again dealt with more issues when my dog became ill and while at school, my family was forced to put her down. Most recently, both of my grandmothers dealt with very severe medical issues, which had caused them to be hospitalized. On the morning of my finance exam, my grandmother had suffered a heart attack. This caused me significant emotional instability and I was truly unable to write my exam let alone feel confident with the outcome.

I truly believe that the overall impact of all of these circumstances were the leading cause that led to the decline of my poor academic performance.

Future Plan

Moving forward I believe that there are multiple steps, which I must take for achieving academic success and mental wellness. In regards to my academics, I feel that it is in my best interest to lighten my course load. If I were to return, my plan would be for this year at Queen¿¿s to take only three courses during each of the two semesters. By doing so, it will allow me to focus more on my studies and ultimately make my course loads much more manageable. I have consulted with an academic adviser and have confirmed that I am only nine economics credits short of attaining my diploma. I am very committed to completing my major in economics. When planning future courses I will continue to consult with an academic adviser and be much more aware of the course syllabus and grading structure. I have always performed in courses less strongly with heavily weighted exams. I

have always struggled with writing exams so I feel that it is imperative for me to choose courses with either no cumulative final exam or ones in which the weighting of the exam is much lower. I have reviewed the economic courses offered and feel that I would enjoy economic history courses. These types of courses would be a good alternative where the structure of the course is comprised more so on essays then tests or exams.

The other significant issue that I am now focused on is dealing with my mental health issues. Recently I have had a comprehensive consultation with my personal physician with regards to my ongoing struggles with depression and anxiety and feel that I have made a great amount of progress to attain a much more positive outlook on life and my future. I am now on prescription medication and feel that it has had a large impact already with my mental health.

I feel that moving forward, I must continue to maintain regular contact and consultations with my physician in an effort to progress and ultimately overcome my health issues. I also undertake that I will plan more visits home on weekends to spend quality time with my family, as they are a valuable support for me. My physician has advised me that I make contact with counseling services at the university that I will be able to access as needed to facilitate my success on campus.

Overall, I want to thank the appeals committee for considering this appeal. I now appreciate that it is quite fortunate that I was forced to address many of my personal issues once I was informed that I was required to take a year off. As a direct result of being informed, I now appreciate how much I have been struggling with my mental health issues over the past years and have now finally been able to form a plan on how to move forward and overcome these issues. I am confident that I will continue to make significant strides and progress and being able to return to Queen¿¿s this fall is another step in improving both my personal and mental health. Thank you so much for the consideration.

Best regards,

Matthew Newediuk
